Key Performance Indicators

I was cruising through a article and came upon this phrase:

Ruck retention was over 90 percent, and Magleby pointed to his matrix of Key Performance Indicators, and how they were almost all flashing green (for improved).

Obviously, a coach of Magelby’s caliber has his list set of what he wants to see from his team, but what would your own set of KPI’s look like for team performance?

Key Performance Indicators are defined as bench marks that can help an organization define success or evaluate progress toward success. For more information on KPI’s click here.

Here’s what my top five KPI’s look like in order of importance…

  1. Tackle Success Rate
  2. Ruck Retention
  3. Set Piece Retention
  4. Gain Line Success Rate
  5. Rate of Attack Channel Change

The theory behind KPI’s is simple. While our goal may always be to “win” there is only one measure to say whether or not we did. It’s a simple pass or fail. If we set KPI’s we can measure our progress on the path toward our ultimate goal. Therefore, it’s better to leave what we cannot control (winning) alone and focus on what we do control (specifics of our play).

This has been about KPI’s for a team but it’s important to realize that these can vary when we move from player to player. This is often discussed as Player Modeling.
